Tweddle Celebrate 95 years and launch plans for the future

Posted by Kerrie Gottliebsen | 19/10/15

Tweddle was joined by hundreds of parents, children, local MPs and staff to celebrate 95 years and to launch their Futures Document and Concept Redevelopment Plans. The redevelopment plans will see our aging facility transformed into a Babies, Toddlers & Families Wellbeing Centre.

We offer our sincere thanks to The Western Bulldogs for allowing us to use Whitten Oval to celebrate our 95th Birthday on Sunday and for the support of Brett Daniher and Jarred Hanks.

Joining Tweddle to mark the important milestone was The Honorable Marsha Thomson Member for Footscray, Maribyrnong Councillor Catherine Cummings, Christine Owen, Director Western Metropolitan Region Department Health and Human Services, and Ms Colleen Hartland, MLC Western Suburbs.

Tweddle Chairperson Dr. Nicole Milburn was thrilled with the day. “This is a real celebration and we wanted to make sure that it incorporated a party atmosphere and plenty of opportunities for play.” she said

Dr Milburn spoke about how play was how babies and toddlers learn and how we help to build their brains. "Tweddle’s focus is very much on the first 1,000 days from 0 – 2 years and on supporting parents to be attuned and responsive to the needs of their child. Evidence shows us, that a family’s environment will determine a child’s growth, emotional development, literacy and numeracy abilities.  We want to help families to give babies and toddlers the best start in life.”

Tweddle supports families in building safe, loving and secure family environments to help prevent childhood achievement gaps throughout education and later life.

"With births across Melbourne’s West exceeding 150 babies a week, it’s important that Tweddle’s prevention and early intervention support services in the very early years adapt to increasing demand” said Tweddle CEO Jacquie O’Brien.

The redevelopment plans include integrated multi purpose family units and modern areas for education and therapeutic support - basically a family hub designed specifically for the comfort and care of vulnerable mums, dads, babies and toddlers and one which will work alongside community partners and universal services.

Ms Marsha Thomson spoke passionately about the importance of Tweddle’s services now and into the future, “Tweddle has adapted its services over the years and their plans for the future will help families continue to transition and cope with challenges. Their in home program also provides a great extension to their services.”

Tweddle will be exploring partnerships and funding opportunities to underpin the redevelopment with a view to building the new facility for mums, dads, babies and toddlers in the near future.

Tweddle Chair Dr Nicole Milburn, Ms Colleen Hartland, MLC Western Suburbs, Aunty Di, The Honorable Marsha Thomson Member for Footscray, Maribyrnong Councillor Catherine Cummings, Tweddle CEO Jacquie O Brien joined staff and hundreds of families to celebrate 95 years and to launch Redevelopment Concept Plans and Tweddle's Futures Document.
