Books wanted for Brimbank book worms

Posted by Kerrie Gottliebsen | 03/08/15

As part of Children’s Book Week 22nd-28th August, Tweddle Child and Family Health Service are asking families to donate children’s books in good condition as part of a project to get books into the homes of disadvantaged families living in Brimbank.

The project collected over 300 beautiful children’s books in 2014 and hopes to exceed that amount this year.  Books are distributed in partnership with The Smith Family with support from Brimbank City Council.

Books can be delivered during the month of August to Tweddle during business hours at 53 Adelaide Street, Footscray or to Brimbank City Council’s Sunshine and Keilor customer service centres, from there, Tweddle Communications Manager Kerrie Gottliebsen will be coordinating the project. Some collections may also be possible.

“We’re aware of the significant importance of books to early brain development in children and books play an important part in our parenting programs at Tweddle. When reading with children, neural pathways are built laying the foundations for strengthened attachment, improved speech, enhanced concentration and the knowledge that reading is fun” said Kirsty Evans, Tweddle Director of Clinical Services and Nursing.

Chair of Brimbank Administrators, Mr John Watson said: “Brimbank City Council is happy to support this very worthwhile program to help get books into the homes of families who need them.”

Early childhood providers and practitioners have known for some years that children need to be introduced to books and reading at the earliest possible age, well before they start school.

The Smith Family is a national charity that seeks to improve the opportunities for children through supporting education and learning and improving access to books for young children in Brimbank is a priority.

Once donated, the books will be distributed to children with the support of Brimbank City Council.
