Tweddle In Home Team Leader builds valuable resources for new parents

Posted by Kerrie Gottliebsen | 08/07/15

Tweddle's In Home Team Leader Kerrie Buchanan has been a contributing author to a project published by The Royal Women’s Hospital, Growing Together, A Kit for Parents: Conception to One Year. This kit is intended for use by families and consists of a book, a smartphone app, a picture book for baby and a bag.

Topics in the section of the book entitled ‘Baby’s First Year’ include feeding your baby, at home with baby, just for dads, caring for your baby, introducing solids, your baby’s development, and ending with a chapter entitled ‘down the track’.

Kerrie contributed sections on: having another baby, sibling rivalry, baby sleep, managing stress, choosing childcare, and returning to work. The ultimate aim of the project, if it is successful in improving the knowledge and confidence of parents, is to make the kit available to new parents across Victoria.

She recently also attended the 6th biennial national Maternal Child and Family Health Nurses (MCaFHN) Conference in Perth, Our Voice Our Future: Researching, reviewing and revitalising our profession.

At this conference, Kerrie contributed a poster on Parents' Views of Knowledge, Attributes & Skills Required for MCaFH Nursing Practice and co-presented a paper on A Fresh Look at MCaFHN Education.

Both these presentations arose from Kerrie’s recent research together with an RMIT colleague exploring the key knowledge, attributes and skills required for MCaFH nurse practice in Victoria.

Kerrie is also due to requalify as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. She has been a lactation consultant for 15 years and is required to re-sit the exam every 5- 10 years to ensure she remains up to date with contemporary breastfeeding knowledge and practice.

Kerrie is extremely passionate about her role as In Home Team Leader.  “ I find it incredibly rewarding being able to share my experience in my role helping families in their own homes” She said “ Parents may initially contact us for sleep and settling, but we help with so much more including behaviour, lactation support and fussy eaters”.  Tweddle In Home consultants provide 2 ½ hour visits and follow up support across Metropolitan Melbourne.
