NAIDOC family day football match at Whitten Oval

Posted by Kerrie Gottliebsen | 31/05/12

As part of NAIDOC Week, Spirit West Services and The Gathering Place will play host to the NAIDOC 2012 Family Day Football Match over the road from Tweddle at Whitten Oval.  Starting at 10.30am - 2pm, the 10th Anniversary William Cooper Cup will see an exciting game of football played between an indigenous team and members of the Victorian Police. This fun family day will include a delicious bbq, activities for kids, stalls and importantly some exciting footballers.

NAIDOC stands for the National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. Its origins can be traced to the emergence of Aboriginal groups in the 1920s which sought to increase awareness in the wider community of the status and treatment of Indigenous Australians.  NAIDOC is a celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and an opportunity to recognise the contributions of Indigenous Australians in various fields. NAIDOC week is the 1st - 8th July
